The controversy continues was Curt Schilling’s sock blood or was it paint. Gary Thorne claims the blood was painted on, the entire Red Sox organiztion claims it was not.

This is a difficult story to understand, Gary Thorne is a national broadcaster for ESPN for several sports and is one of the most professional play-by-play men in the business. It seems unlikely that he would make something like this up, guess here is when Mirabelli and him discussed this it was taken out of context. Perhaps, Mirabelli was joking and Thorne took it as fact. The problem is the Red Sox are ailinated and this will certainly come up next time Thorne does an ESPN Red Sox broadcast.

The other issue at play is ESPN is distancing themselves from Thorne, will their be any fallout from this incident, time will tell.

  • Gary Thorn has no business being in the booth. I had to stomach myself to listen to him and Jim “Fruit of the Loom” Palmer last night since Direct TV carried the Orioles telecast. They are so bad that my wife even asked me to turn off the sound.

Thorn calls out fly balls to the outfield like they are blasts every time. He has no clue. No wonder why ESPN let his sorry excuse for a broadcaster go.

  • It was clearly a bad judgement call to make a comment like this without knowing the facts. But because this is a respected announcer and a highly publicized team, it seems like Thorne’s career will definitely take a beating.

  • I’m a Yanks fan but even I know that Gary Thorne is an idiot, having listened to his Met broadcasts. I hate Schilling as much as anyone with common sense does, but the blood on the sock was real. I’ll never admit that he did something heroic, because when the Yankees cant hit a flat low 90’s fastball and a splitter with little bite, you deserve to lose game 6 of the 2004 ALCS as much as the Sox deserved to win.

That whole situation was sad. Curt went through all of that pain of pitching with the sutures in, then he has to deal with that crap 3 years later. Its disgusting, but everything came to light. Now Schilling trashed Bonds, then apologized. I think a lot of fans go against Bonds, and we’ve all said things like he’s a cheater. Schilling just has his comments magnified.
